Tuff Fitty was
established in 1991 and held it’s first AGM in November of that year.
This set the standard for the club whereby a committee of members runs
the club for the benefit of it’s members backed by a written
constitution. Being one of
the earliest Triathlon Clubs in the South of England, membership growth
was initially rapid. Numbers eased as other Triathlon clubs were formed
in the area, but a solid training schedule had been established for each
of the Swim, Cycle and Run disciplines. This enabled Tuff Fitty to
continue to appeal to multisport competitors and it’s reach extended
beyond the immediate
This set training
calendar is complimented with a club championship where Tuff Fitty
members nominate 7 different triathlons during the season. Points are
awarded for the first Tuff Fitty home with points awarded to other club
finishers. These races include sprint distance races as well as longer
distance races to enable all members, of whatever standard, to compete
and gain recognition with their club.
The increasing
popularity of multisport has enabled the club to continue to grow and in
2007 passed the 100 member threshold.
Tuff Fitty is rightly proud of its members who have competed for
Team GB, abroad, and the many members who have competed at the full
Ironman distance. However the club is equally relevant for people just
starting out on their multisport adventure, as well as those people who
are simply looking for structured training sessions.
These sessions
usually prove motivational to encourage members out to train, especially
during the darker winter months and through inclement weather. Tuff

Tuff Fitty affiliate
to British Triathlon enabling members to obtain a discount on joining
this organisation. The club also affiliate to Cycle Time Trials for
members to participate in midweek and weekend Time Trials and
Cyclosportives. We also affiliate to UK Athletics to gain benefits from
this organisation again enabling cheaper membership for individuals.
To ensure members
gain real benefits from being a Tuff Fitty, the club organise a series
of member’s only races during the year. These are generally low key and
low cost to encourage a large number of participants, and some coaching
and training seminars are also held.
Some people may see
the training schedule with sessions on most nights of the week and feel
such a club would not suit them. However many Tuff Fitty’s work shifts,
or away during the week and members should feel able to pick and choose
which sessions they wish to attend.
To keep the membership informed, periodic newsletters are
published and there is a thriving forum for news, comments and training
details.
For anyone new
interested in taking the first step and coming along, it can seem
daunting. However Tuff Fitty are keen to grow it’s membership base and
welcome contact equally from established competitors and those new to
multisport. Indeed it is actively encouraged that potential members come
to some of the training sessions first to meet the squad and ensure it
is for them. Only after this need you consider joining to become a
member of one of the largest Tri clubs on the
Our
current membership tariff is £20 for an individual, £30 for a family,
with juniors or students £10. A fee is charged for the swim sessions,
but most of the other training sessions do not incur a charge.
Those people reading this with a view to coming along, please do;
you would be made welcome. Any questions or concerns, please contact the
Club Secretary as set out above.
