This non wet-suit swim has seen club members participate and 2020 is no exception
The Pier to Pier swim follows a long tradition here on the Isle of Wight. When it first started 68 years ago the Deep Sea Fishermen and other locals threw down the gauntlet during Shanklin Regatta week and challenged each other to a race in the sea from one end of the bay to the other, notably from Sandown Pier to Shanklin Pier. They swam in the traditional swim costumes of the day in the open sea whatever the conditions! No risk assessment, no safety cover probably, few officials, no numbered hats etc. We now run into the sea rather than jump off the pier, we are accompanied (for safety reasons) by so many kayakers, fishermen, Sandown Lifeboat and Ryde Inshore Rescue! We finish the race on the beach by Shanklin Rowing Club.
The Thames Marathon, now in its 10th year, is a 14km long-distance challenge swim from Henley-on-Thames to Marlow. It covers a beautiful stretch of the Thames and has become one of open water swimming’s most prestigious marathon swims.
The swim is split into 4 sections. Swimmers will be required to exit the water at the 3 locks (Hambledon at 4km, Hurley at 10km and Temple at 11.8km) where food and energy snacks will be available.
Participants have the choice of waves – the first four waves will be for faster swimmers wanting to compete against the clock, with those expecting to finish in 3hrs 30 minutes swimming in the first wave. The remaining waves are for those that don’t necessarily want to race, but prefer to enjoy the experience at their own pace.
The manageable chunks make this event do-able for many types of swimmer.
A Club special – Tuff Fitty have hired Westhampnett Lake for an evening of swim fun
All swimmers will need to sign a disclaimerBRIGHT coloured swim hats MUST be worn.
If you have not ticked ‘going’ you will not be permitted to swim on Facebook. If you are not on FB you should inform any coaches or committee members that you will be attending.
At the moment this event is only for TUFFs – we will see how numbers go and then open it up to your friends at a cost of £5 PP.
We are proud to be putting on this event to add additional value to your annual membership.
P.S Bring some cash as the cafe will be open and I dont think they take card payment.

Swim Serpentine is a one-day open water swimming festival staged in the heart of London. The 2020 event will take place on Saturday 26 September.
Organised by London Marathon Events, the festival is held in and around the beautiful Serpentine in Hyde Park, the venue for the open water swimming competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Thousands of swimmers will participate in events that include:
- Half-Mile Swim: Taking in half a lap of the Serpentine, there is plenty of time to swim this distance at your leisure with a friend, race your mum or dad or just to try out an open water swimming event with an achievable but for some still challenging swim.
- One-Mile Swim: A classic distance in the world of open water swimming events. Swim Serpentine takes place on the same course as the London 2012 Marathon Swimming Olympic event, with one full lap around the Serpentine making up the one-mile swim. This is the most popular of all the swim distances for Swim Serpentine with swimmers taking anything from 20 minutes through to one hour to complete the swim.
- Two-Mile Swim: For those who would like to test themselves with two full (1.6km) laps of the Serpentine. Aimed at more experienced swimmers who have already completed a mile open water swim previously. A challenging two-lap swim set in a beautiful location.
Every swimmer will be able to choose a start wave, with swimmers setting off at regular intervals during the day.
Now in its fourth year, Swim Serpentine is already a must-do event in the open water swimming calendar. All your needs are catered for with heated changing rooms, dunk zone, pontoon start and finish, full water safety crew, hot tubs and exhibition area.
Set in the stunning fresh water lake of Westhampnett, you can choose to take on the distance of your choice. Swim against yourself and beat the clock or challenge a team mate in the water and go head to head!
This event is perfect for experienced open water swimmers that would like to try a new event in the area and have the choice of swimming a marathon open water distance, but alike the event is suitable to a novice open water swimmer who would like to try and complete their first open water distance, of their choice and swim in the comfort of a lake, fully supported before taking to a river or the sea.
Parking will be available at the venue with an overspill car park arranged.
Registration will take place on the day, opening at 8.00am.
The race will start at 9.00am gun time for 5k & 10k distances. 10.00am gun time for 3k & 1k distances.
