Tuff Fitty’s Swimmers Revenge

The Captains Swimmers Revenge was organised by Nicole Patterson-Lett assisted by Adrian Oliver. The attention to detail was meticulous, particularly around safety, with a jetski supported by a beach spotter with binoculars from The Beach, who also provided a radio to Clive H so the three could communicate to keep abreast of how many swimmers were in the water at any time. With Clive Patterson-Lett giving a race briefing – the stage was nicely set and we are grateful to Nicole who has reported in from another very enjoyable Captains event:-

Captains Swimmers Revenge – where those of us that love the swimming and dread the running, time to get our own back 😉

“The Harvey boys and the PL’s had taken part in the Brighton event many moons ago and loved it, so we adapted it for a Tuff event from The Beach.  The Beach café were super enthusiastic; put out the buoy, manned the water safety jet ski throughout, and brought staff in early to provide HUGE bacon or veggie sausage sandwiches for all hungry finishers”.

“Format: 400(ish)metre sea swim / 1(ish)km seafront run / 400(ish)metre sea swim”.

“6 relay teams of 3 – teams and fishy names sorted in advance to encourage team bonding/tactics etc”.

“When No1 has finished their first swim, No2 starts, and when No2 has finished their first swim, No3 starts … so not long ‘til everyone is somewhere on the course swimming or running (or chatting on the transition mat and forgetting it’s a race (NPL)!)”

Clive Harvey, despite loving the ‘more swim less run’ format, gallantly offered to officiate, timekeep and take photos – huge THANKS CliveH.”

“There are results/times, but this was about so much more than that.  (No, not just about the bacon sandwiches either!)  The courage of some of the Tuffs that had signed up despite feeling anxious about sea swimming, and with the support of their clubmates did themselves really proud.  Special shout out Jess, Callum, Shelley, Pinky Sue, Jenny and Claire who took the first leg and showed us all just how strong that current was … and each swam 600m EXTRA!”

“Another shout for all those Tuff Olympians that partied hard the night before and still made the pre-7am start, good effort!”

The SardinesAdrian, Jess & Hazel – finished first (and Adrian would like it made clear he didn’t choose the teams 😉) each winning a free Saturday swim, whoop!

The Mackerels Mike, Wendy K and Callum – won the hard fought spot prize, a free track session each, for being the most enthusiastic and supportive team.

There’s been requests for another Swimmers Revenge, so we hope to get a date confirmed for the end of this tri season – keep a look out and sign up ASAP so we can get the bacon sandwich order in, and sort teams.”

It is always difficult to decide whether to publish the results as a club event, although when looking at the times, it is known many took maximum time in transition to have a natter, or update their team mates. With that proviso, the table is listed. Timing splits were usually taken mid point in transition so both the swims and run will include some time trotting up the beach.
